Sri Kalahasti Temple: The Abode of Wind

Sri Kalahasti Temple, located in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India, is a revered Pancha Bhuta Sthalam, representing the element of Wind (Vayu). This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is renowned for its unique association with the element of air, symbolizing the omnipresent and life-sustaining force of wind. As a Pancha Bhuta Sthalam, Sri Kalahasti represents Vayu, the element of wind. The temple's sanctum sanctorum houses a self-manifested (Swayambhu) lingam, which is said to be untouched by human hands. A unique feature of this lingam is that it is constantly fanned by a natural breeze, symbolizing the presence of Vayu. This perpetual airflow is considered a divine phenomenon, reinforcing the temple's association with the element of wind. Kannappa, also known as Kannappa Nayanar[1], is a legendary figure in both Telugu and Tamil folklore renowned for his unwavering devotion to the Hindu god Shiva. According to legend, Kannappa plucked out his eye as an offering to a Shiva Lingam after blood began oozing out of the lingam. Before he could sacrifice his other eye, Shiva appeared.
